General Trends Across the Most Popular US Websites by Traffic

Many top 100 sites experienced fluctuations in May, despite an overall traffic increase of 3.1%. While the overall picture is complicated, the domains were almost evenly split between winners and losers for the month with 49% seeing increases.

Significantly, x.com saw a traffic surge of over 300%. Other social media platforms had smaller increases: instagram.com (5%) and reddit.com (4.1%). Conversely, facebook.com's traffic dropped by nearly -4%, and tiktok.com also declined by -3%.

Search engines saw a decrease in traffic overall. Although bing.com grew by 3.4%, traffic to google.com and duckduckgo.com fell by -1% and -4.5%, respectively. 

The e-commerce sector had mixed results that followed the overal top 100 trend. Amazon.com saw a 2.6% traffic increase, but many others saw declines. Ebay.com decreased by -2.2%, and etsy.com fell by -2.9%. Bestbuy.com bucked the trend with a 7.3% increase, while target.com experienced a -6.9% decrease.

News and media platforms had varied results in May. Nytimes.com had a notable 8.5% increase, while cnn.com saw a -7.6% decrease. Bbc.com grew slightly by 3%, and msn.com by 1.4%, but foxnews.com declined by -6%. 

Overall, the top 100 May traffic data presents a complex picture. While some sites and categories show increased online engagement, others indicate potential concerns. For instance, openai.com's traffic dropped nearly -40%, suggesting shifts in the tech landscape, whereas x.com's traffic explosion tells a different story.

It’s Not Just About the Traffic

Although observing position changes through traffic volume can help to analyze global trends and benchmark your performance against the competition, Semrush’s Traffic Analytics reports also include important metrics to keep watch on:

  • Mobile vs. desktop traffic share shows which devices people use to enter a site page. When doing competitive benchmarking, this metric can help to determine whether you need to implement certain steps (e.g. ensure further mobile optimization or come up with additional desktop traffic generation tactics) to strengthen your traffic acquisition strategy and stay in the game.
  • Number of pages per visit, average visit duration, and bounce rate reflect the quality of site content. If you spot that your competitor’s website shows better performance, it's a sign that you have to work on your SEO and content strategy, comparing the structure, content, and design of your site pages against theirs.

The Most Visited Websites - US, Education Category

The education category had a surprisingly strong May, with top sites experiencing an average month-over-month (MoM) growth of over 3%. Despite many schools letting out for the summer, 70% of the top sites saw positive growth, and 40% saw double-digit increases.

Collegeboard.org and infinitecampus.org led the way with traffic surges of 36.8% and 24.3%, respectively. Powerschool.com saw a 20.2% increase, and schoology.com grew by 18.2%.

However, industry leader instructure.com had a rough month, with traffic slipping by -23%. Clever.com fared even worse, losing -36% of its traffic.

While some of these changes can be attributed to finals, the nearly 75-point gap between the top and bottom sites is notable. We're curious to see how these platforms will perform once the school year fully ends.
